Use the mouse wheel to set subdivision levels just like with with loop-cut-slide tool
In edit mode when you add a loop-cut-slide the tool gives you an option use the mouse wheel to add more cuts. I think the edit mode subdivision tool could benefit from this as well. So when you add a subdiv in edit mode have the mouse wheel control how many subdivisions/cuts levels you get.

Yes! Mouse scroll to set cuts! YES!
While we're at it, I think it should also allow immediate entry of numeric digits for the number of cuts without perhaps showing a panel, moving the mouse over to it, clicking/dragging. For instance ws12[enter] would subdivide with 12 cuts.
Yes please. I miss this from the old operator. The older one feels superior right now due to this feature alone.
While this would be very convenient, I think many people would accidentally crash Blender with this. With very small, low-poly models, it would not be a problem, but with larger models, a quick flick of the wheel would add 4 or 5 subdiv levels, and Blender would freeze for 10 minutes.
@Andy Sellers: Good point ! This should then be managed by reducing the wheel reactivity to allow fine tuning. Instead of reacting to each single step of the wheel, maybe react to every third of fifth step.
@pcsd24: I don't know about that. If the mouse scroll just registers every fifth click it may feel very broken. That being said there is a problem with subdivs if you add them too many even with modifiers. As every subdiv quadruples the amount of faces it is very easy to get into trouble with them with just a misclick.
I think a better solution might be to add a query if the user wants to add more subdivs to a mesh if the current vert number is already couple of millions (user confirgurable subdiv limit for this query?). Like a warning to ask if you really want to increase your mesh from 2 million verts to 9 million: "the resulting mesh from this operation has 9 million vertices. This may slow down or crash your pc. Do you want to continue y/n?". It is a warning you'd rarely see but would prevent misclicks and mis-scrolls.
You can still add 10 subdivs to a plane with no queries but you won't accidentally blow out your mesh or pc if you accidentally want to subdiv a mesh on click too far.
