Eevee volumetric settings - Automatically set domain
This week I've been having a great time working with Eevee's amazingly fast rendering, and occasionally awesome looking volumes. By far my BIGGEST frustration is having to manually set the volumetric domain 'start' and 'end' in Eevee's settings. If I'm animating the camera I am having to edit these settings on a frame by frame bases in order to avoid banding lines and flickering animations.
It's seems a relatively easy fix to have the volume domain calculated automatically by having blender get the distance from the active camera to the nearest point on a bounding box of all volume objects, and use this to set the domain's 'start' - Blender then gets the distance from the active camera to the furthest point of that bounding box and set this as the 'end' point. Blender then recalculates these distances each frame - and we have volumes rendered at maximum quality always!! The volumetric resolution is then dependent on the size of our volume objects in the scene.
Obviously sometimes you might want to lower the quality of your volume domain for faster rendering - you could still keep the manual controls and have this option as a tick box next to the current settings; "set domain automatically" - and/or have a drop down to reduce the resolution of the automatically calculated domain? You would then probably need to specify an object as a volume object in a tick box in it's material panel (to save blender needing to recognize that something is plugged into the volume input socket in the object's shader output node).
Having this change would make volumes in Eevee so much more usable in my opinion.
Does this effect anybody else?
