Please bring back the Contact Shadow feature

In Blender 4.1, the Contact Shadow option for lights was an essential tool — especially for cel animation and toon-style rendering workflows. However, it seems to have been removed or significantly changed in the more recent updates of Eevee.

This feature was extremely helpful for producing clean and stable shadow contact between objects. Without it, toon shadows often appear “jittery” or noisy, making it difficult to achieve the crisp, stylized look that cel-shaded projects require.

We strongly request that the Contact Shadow feature be reintroduced or replaced with an equivalent function in the current Eevee system. For many stylized artists, it’s a key element for achieving visually grounded and appealing results without heavy post-processing.

Additionally, even when Contact Shadows were available, they sometimes produced shimmering or grainy edges — requiring artists to blur lines or use filters in compositing to soften the result. It would be great if the Eevee shadow pipeline could include a built-in stabilizer or denoise option for Contact Shadows, specifically tuned for toon or stylized workflows.

Summary of requests:

Bring back the Contact Shadow feature in Eevee (as it was in Blender 4.1).

Or provide an equivalent feature that allows fine control over object contact shading in toon/cel workflows.

Improve stability and edge smoothness of contact shadows or offer a filter option inside Eevee.

Thank you for considering this — the Contact Shadow feature was small but incredibly powerful for stylized and 2D-3D hybrid animation workflows. 4.1.png 4.5.png
