One key for cycling transform axes locks
Transform tools (move, rotate, scale) all the time needs x,y,z keys to reestrict effect to one axis (or with shift for two). But searching right name for desired axis and subsequently searching for right key on keyboard is highly ineffective for visually oriented user.
For this purpose is needed only one key for cycling all axes locks:
- tap (may be scroll wheel) - restricts z
- tap the same key - restricts x
- tap the same key - restricts y
- tap the same key - restricts nothing
- tap the same key - restricts z
- tap the same key - restricts x
... y, n, z, x, y, n, z, x, y, n ... ... ...
Quick and easy.

Not exactly the same, but you can visually set the Modal Axis by pressing the Middle Mouse button and selecting the axis from the 3d View.
But works this also for blocking axes ? Like shift-z, shift-x, shift-y does ?
Yes. Shift+Middle mouse locks to a plane.
Wow. Really does! (you have only to press shift BEFORE mid button, not after, or switch between them)
And does it work also for knife tool? Or some kind of hack?
Locking by mouse is also impossible, if origin of transformation is far out of monitor.
