"Follow Render Properties" instead of "Follow Scene"

Super small tweak, but I think this should read "Follow Render Properties", as the Scene tab does not have any "Color Management" settings in it (unless I'm missing something?).

I think the reason why it is named that way is because render properties are unique to each scene, and are part of the scene's data.

It's not meaning as in "follow settings that would be in the Scene tab", but instead to "follow the render properties of the current scene".

In order to know which of "Follow Scene" or "Follow Render settings" is more understandable by the average user, I think it could be nice if the BF could probe the userbase' opinion with some polls on their social media.

The head designer of Musescore (a FOSS music notation app) did this quite a few times when redesigning their GUI:

Thanks for the clarification—that makes more sense now. I'm all for involving the community, but I don't think a poll is necessary for such a minor change. Maybe the solution should simply encapsulate both terms—something like 'Follow Scene’s Render Settings'?

I was thinking, why not go for another GUI altogether?

  • Use a checkbox on the panel header instead of a push button inside the panel
  • Name the panel "Override Color Management"
mockup checkbox Bonus benefit: it visually shows even more clearly that it enables the panel's content:
    gray out
  • Have the checkbox's tooltip explain in plain words what it does:
"Set a different Color Management than the scene's render settings."
    tooltip

Got nothing to add, that's a great idea mate.

'Follow Render Properties' spans a lot of pixel space. Normally these panels are much smaller and would make the chosen text cut off. A poll might not communicate the consequences of the choices well, letting the participants make primordial decisions.

Reaching out to the community to vote for changes slows down development. A small change will become a process where we need to wait for feedback before we can change it. That needs to be tracked etc, quality of feedbacks are unknown, etc.

Blender development is open and everyone is free to participate. We have detailed feedback threads on devtalk.blender.org on various running developments. chat.blender.org where development can be followed and even participated.
