VSE: Option to render in the background
When you are rendering, every frame of the footage you're rendering is displayed in the image editor/render view. Unless you plan to inspect the output of the render in realtime, this seems like a total waste of system resources. I'm not talking about hiding the window, it really needs to stop doing this process and just render directly to disk. Most video editors just show a progress bar, and that's more than enough.
So yeah, an option to truly render in the background would be nice. And no, this is not about command line rendering.

I always wondered why vse doesn't have such option. It makes no sense.
Have you tried menu *Edit *⟩ *Preferences *⟩ *Interface *category ⟩ *Editors *panel ⟩ Temporary Editors subpanel ⟩ set Render In to Keep User Interface :
Alternatively, or in addition, you can also go in the Render menu and enable Lock Interface which will entirely freeze the GUI during render which is the next best thing before using external render farms or cli rendering:
I believe the first option just doesn't open the window but the waste is still happening in the background. If you open the editor manually you'll see it.
The second just prevents you from interacting with the ui while it's rendering iirc, but the detour to the image editor still happens.
I have no idea why such logical and expected way of rendering is not implemented in blender. And not only that, even the playhead shouldn't move. It's too much ui activity while rendering that I never saw in other editors. No wonder it renders slower than the competition.
If no render output is open, it doesn't show any render output.
i dont trust this process. it still feels like its doing the same thing in background. no performance improvements. and the playhead still moves. its basically playing and rendering at the same time. i guess only a developer could tell us what is really happening
displaying the rendering on screen will take a neglectable amount of performance. The rendered Image is already in GPU Memory so the buffer is just also output on screen.
When deactivating the Image viewer in preferences, no performance is "wasted" The performance impact of moving the playhead is far below anything measurable. When Blender is slower then other Software, we are talking about software optimisation, used features of the renderer etc (I would be interested what you exactly mean wich editors are faster). Keep in Mind Gameengines for example outputing the rendered Image >60 times/sec on screen.
What makes you think you loose performance, do you have any numbers?
If you want best performance, use the comandline renderer, maybe you can test how much performance you gain by deactivation the whole UI. And install Linux, it will also give you some more preformance.
Why on earth would you downvote something that would benefit everyone? I'm asking for an OPTION. If you wanna keep using it as it is you still would. The current weird/unnecessary behavior is not going anywhere.
Why do I think...? Ask yourself why the command line rendering has better performance. It's because it has no UI activity. So the less UI activity while rendering the better. Every performance improvement is welcome.
This platform is so disappointing. Unbelievable.
Fwiw, I upvoted it... 🙂 If there's a chance of better rendering performance by doing this, I'm in.. 👍
