Modifier Stack
Remove the Add Modifier search button and return to the old drop down.
I've have Blender go into infinite loops and lost hours and hours of work because I accidentally typed in the wrong modifier name.
For example, I lost a lot of work when I typed in "sib" when looking for subdivision, but somehow it looked like Generate Skin was applied, resulting in Blender becoming totally unresponsive.
If you wanted to keep this new modifier stuff, then at LEAST have blender save out to .blend1 before applying the next modifier so that when Blender (inevitably) goes into another one of these infinite unresponsive loops requring Task Manager intervention, then work can potentially be recovered.
Pinning using Quick Favourites is terrible too. There was nothing wrong with the drop down.

If you are more comfortable with clicking on the panel, you can still click instead of writing
Honestly, this sounds more like an issue with applying a modifier making blender unresponsive. Under what scenario is adding a Generate Skin modifier sending blender into an infinite loop?
Also, I know this isn't an answer to this problem, but for subdivision specifically, you can use Ctrl + 1-5 in object mode to add a subdivision modifier with the given LoD
