detailed modification date of each material

In Blender's .blend files, recording the modification dates of geometry data and materials could significantly enhance efficiency in team projects. This is because, when appending files, one can replace identically named materials and objects based on their modification times. The process could be even more perfect if a check list is added during appending or importing, or if a "File Import Options" window is implemented.

I get where you're heading with this, here my two cents:

  • save the timestamp of each node setup will increase file size and thus decrease efficency. Also why not save timestamps of all objects and data then?
  • timestamps may not be accurate: a node setup can also be changed minimally, e.g. moving nodes

Tbh i would more or less go with naming conventions in your case: e.g. MatV1, MatV2 or Mat_Name_20204-Nov-01, then your teammates can easily swap out theirs, and when the material is not used anymore can get purged.

I don't understand the workflow being referenced, outside of blender.

If you have an OS directory, with A.blend in the folder - you can only have one file called A.blend. Different modification dates don't allow multiple files with the same name to exist in the same folder. Therefore, when you're appending from a particular directory - there's only one choice you could make, based on file name.
