Cutout animation workflow in blender 2.8.

I am trying to adapt cutout animation workflow to blender 2.8. There is one thing that is missing for me. In Toon Boom Harmony it's called Substitute Drawings. It allows to have multiple drawings of one object (e.g. hand positions) that can be swapped over time. If that option would be available for grease pencil object it would be a lot easier to create that type of animation. Drawings should be inside the grease pencil object and each one should contain it's own layers (for lineart, fill, etc.) Image @Craig Jones made a point, that my explanation is not good enough, so I made breakdown how the new Grease Pencil hierarchy should look like to support cutout animation. The Grease Pencil Object is main object with its pivot point. In each GP Object there are Drawings, that can be switched on the timeline to create animation inside it. And each Drawing have it's own GP Layers that can contain lineart, fill, masks or whatever is needed. Image

try using grease pencil modifer - > TIME OFFSET and set it to FIXED FRAME

if you need to have it work with multiple layers you can allways use drivers. just repeat the process above as many times as you need and set the drivers on the value FRAME to "var" then just right click the main frame value and copy the path to it. then past it as the input to the "var" and you are done.

all additional modifer will be observing the main value so you can just copy and paste them all over the place.

* @Omgzdenek * I know this thread is already dead, but using drivers to control such simple thing is just overcomplicated. One more level in GP Object with ability to swap it on the timeline would the best and most simple solution. I've been working in Toon Boom Harmony (Rick and Morty is done with this software) and in there it works perfect.

Hélio.

I think that you need see the time offset modifier.

It's a cool feature, I love Toon boom Harmony, it would be cool to see it implemented in Blender the way it is implemented there. But I guess it's very specific for 2d animation and that particular software. I think currently in Blender similar effect can be achieved by using drivers?

* @Chingiz Jumagulov * Yes, I've seen that it can be achieved by using drivers, but this more like workaround and it doesn't have any preview of what you are choosing. Since blender made such huge leap in 2d animation workflow I think it can be pushed a bit further.

* @hosepabulo * Yeah, I agree this stuff is dope!

if that workflow doesn't work, try OpenToonz!

* @momotron2000 * I'm learning Open Toonz slowly for my personal stuff. For my professional use I would like to switch from Toon Boom to Blender and I almost sure that this one feature would make this possible.

* @hosepabulo * Open Toonz is also used for professional stuff
