Fix the Texture Node Editor

The Texture Node Editor seems like an amazing and very useful tool, if it actually worked. Right now editing the nodes has no effect on the compositor and seems to be fundamentally bugged. Let's get this feature working!

I guess it will be overhauled, someday, within the Everything Nodes Project.

This was only meant to be for texture brushes when they built it, then they added some support for world texture and then later for line style. I too look forward to it working better - but the Compositor got a fix recently to add a button in the Texture Node to access textures in the Properties window so it is easier now to work with the textures in the Compositor. I do like the idea of this becoming an input into any texture node elsewhere in the scene, that would be amazing.

I noticed there is a mode for world texture but never figured out if it works or how should it be used. Do you have any info on that ?

Agreed. I absolutely love the idea of having complex and procedural way of generating and controling texture creation. Texture node editor absolutely needs a makeover. I personally see mainly 3 things it needs.

  1. performance upgrade.
  • Hard to judge what a good performance out of something like this actually is, but recently I experienced whole blender being super slowed when using it for generating animated stylized noise for compositing.
  • Granted the system I made was fairly complex, but nowhere near complexity I would like to be able to achieve. I'd go as far as to say that currently I can barely achieve the lowest level of complexity for it to even be worh waiting for all the loading delays
  1. Previews.
  • At least we have ability to see stuff when plugged in compositor preview and display it in image editor in "viewer" output that way.
  • There is a "viewer" node in Texture nodes editor, and pardon my ignorance, but I never found a way how to use it. And that should be the main way of getting feedback from the system to artists currently.
  1. Documentation. - Just gona keep it vauge for now and say it can be improved. Thanks to documentation we have on blender manual it is possible to figure out and learn how these texture nodes work, but I feel it still has lot to be desired.
