Make theme creation easier/less daunting
Currently, theme creation is rather daunting, with hundreds of colors, none of which are linked- making it frustrating to make a unified theme. While it allows fine control, it is also frustrating. There should be an easier theme creation UI with proper grouping, while giving advanced control as an option after creating the basics of a scene. There should also be a preview UI instead of simply applying it to the whole blender window, forcing the user to tab back and forth. The UI in KDE's color chooser is an example of what I am thinking of. It has easy groupings, if you chance 'Window Background' it changes all backgrounds colors, and you can then go into tabs and diverge from that grouping if you choose. I have refrained from making themes, as there are MANY different background color options, just within the first drop down: This is clearly a problem that many people want to fix, as shown by the creation of addons that fulfill this demand, such as 'Easy Theme Creator': blendermarket.com/products/theme-editor Something like this would be ideal to implement into Blender to make theme creation easier, as currently, there are barely any themes, as the creation of a theme is such a massive undertaking, an undertaking which, due to the way themes are set up, can be easily wiped out with miss-clicks. I feel a renovation of the theme creator, which has not changed drastically for some time, is in order.

Hey, lets bump this. I really do dislike the way themes are set up now. There is really no need to split it the way it is now, especially since it's not all logically set up anyways. For example I want to change the header color for the timeline, but I just can't find it. So please clean it all up an condense it A LOT into something more manageable :)
I agree. It would be nice to have some of the features from Theme Editor directly in Blender.
* @ xan2622 * Yes, I linked to that. It isn't free, however. Why not integrate something so useful into blender instead of forcing people to buy external products to get functionality?
* @gregorystarr00 * It takes time for Blender developers to add features. And there are features that are highly requested. I don't think themes are. Themes are not top priority (which is understandable).
I guess developers also focus on fixing critical bugs first.
* @ xan2622 *, from what it sounds like from the weekly meeting notes, the core developers are quite busy bug squashing right now. Hopefully they get them all, or at least the vast majority, by the next release.
Hopefully then, after a bit of a rest, they will have a chance to give a little love to improving the internal theme preferences.
In the mean time I should take a look at Theme Editor. Currently my favorite theme to work within is a very slightly adjusted Greentooth, but I would love to build a custom theme from scratch. Sadly, for me, I find the Blender's theme preferences rather overwhelming so perhaps Theme Editor might be the tool I didn't know I wanted until now. Gonna take a look.
While they're at it, a better way to set keymaps would be good too. It's ridiculously daunting.
And "learn a bazillion bits of Python!" is not helpful.
Nice idea. I personally like blender's theme editor already. The only thing missing is the reset to defaults consistensy in color assignment. Blender tends to assign a black color when you try to reset it. It would be nice to have it just return to how it was set to factory settings.
