UI Feature. 3D Viewport Overlays common for all Viewport Shading types. ( Change to per Shading Type )
Currently the Viewport Ovelays applies the Settings for all the Viewport Shading types.
This means that if the User enables Wireframe when in the Solid Shading mode blender will apply that setting to all the Shading Modes.
So when the User switches to Rendered or Material Shading all Objects will have Wireframes overlayed. Then the User has to Disable Overlays when in Rendered Mode and then re-enable Overlays when back to Solid Mode, or Disable Overlays ( Which then disables any Options the User need for that Mode )
This is tedious and clunky as when switching the User has to Enable and Disable different Options.
If the Viewport Overlays could apply the Settings uniquely for each Shading type, a User could setup each Shading type with different settings.
eg in Wireframe : Most of the options on but Outline Selected Disabled. Solid : Outline Selected Enabled, Wireframe On and Wireframe Opacity Adjusted. Material : Most of the options off but Outline Selected Enabled, Face Orientation Enabled. rendered : All options off but Text Info On etc.
Allowing the User to set Viewport Overlays per Shading Type will vastly reduce the amount of clicking needed when switching between modes by only having the needed Options Enabled or Disabled in that Mode.
It already works that way with the Viewport Shading Options ie. each Shading Type has different Shading Options.

That's far from a papercut 😅 it's a major change in how the overlay engine works.
We had this discussion back during the early 2.80 dev days, and the answer is always that everyone wants something different, so the best would be to have: presets. Allowing you to combine any overlay with a shading mode.
I will Edit the Papercut out !!
Would it really be that complex to implement ? I mean nothing new is being added just Each Shading Mode is reading the Options set when in that Shading Mode. Its already works that way with the Viewport Shading Options.
Maybe some Ninja may just look at this n figure some novel way to accomplish this.
I think Presets is over complicating the UX, just the ability to select different Options per Shading Mode is a big improvement to the current UX. It does not change any UI bits and does not break any Users current Workflow.
This way if I want to enable the Wireframes overlay I need to do it 3 times for each shading mode. I feel like I'll be going back and forth to the overlays panel to turn settings on and off. That's a change in workflow.
And right now if you enable Wireframe you have to turn if off when you switch the Shading type so there's already a back and forth. To address the Issue Of Enabling Options for all Shading Modes can be solved with Alt+click on the Checkboxs.
I don't think this is as bad, because there's a global toggle for overlays (
Alt+Shift+Z)Having to constantly use such a complicated shortcut IMO is not solution . When the Overlays are disabled the User cannot use an Overlay they need. So then the User has to Enable Overlays and after that Disable what is not needed and enable what is needed. Then when the Shading mode is changed again Enable whats needed and disable whats not needed again.
