Ads in Blender

The Blender community holds immense appreciation for the powerful, free, and open-source tool you provide. The recent "Join the 2 percent" campaign and discussions at the Blender Conference 2024 have underscored the clear and growing need for increased financial resources to propel Blender's development, attract and retain top talent with competitive salaries, and undertake ambitious projects that will solidify its position as an industry leader. This proposal outlines a potential new revenue stream that could significantly contribute to these goals without compromising the core principles of Blender: the introduction of strictly optional, user-controlled in-software advertisements.

This is not a call to transform Blender into an ad-driven platform, but rather to offer a voluntary way for the vast user base, many of whom may not have the financial means to contribute directly, to support the software's growth. The key principle is that this system would be entirely opt-in, ensuring that the user experience for those who prefer an ad-free environment remains unchanged.

Here are three potential, non-intrusive implementation ideas:

  1. Startup Ad: During Blender's loading process, a time when system resources are being allocated, a single, unobtrusive advertisement could be displayed. This would monetize a natural waiting period without interrupting the user's workflow. A clear and easily accessible option in the settings would allow users to disable this feature at any time.

  2. Voluntary Ad Button: A dedicated "Support Blender" button could be integrated into the top bar of the user interface. Clicking this button would trigger a short video advertisement. This places the decision to engage entirely in the hands-of-the-user, allowing them to contribute at moments they deem appropriate during their workflow.

  3. "Save with an Ad" Option: Upon exiting Blender, the familiar save prompt could include an additional option: "Save and Support with an Ad." Choosing this would initiate a brief advertisement after the file is successfully saved. This provides a final, unobtrusive opportunity for users to contribute to the project.

#The Importance of Exploring New Revenue Streams:

The success of major technology companies like Google and Meta has demonstrated the immense revenue-generating potential of advertising. While Blender's philosophy and goals differ significantly, the underlying principle of leveraging a large and engaged user base to generate income is a powerful one. Blender boasts a global community of millions of passionate users. If even a fraction of this community chose to engage with optional ads, the financial impact could be substantial, providing a steady and reliable income stream to supplement the invaluable contributions from the Development Fund and Blender Studio.

The Blender Foundation's 2023 Annual Report highlighted a healthy growth in donations. However, the report also outlined the crucial need to offer more competitive salaries to attract and retain the world-class development talent required to tackle ambitious projects like the ongoing Vulkan integration and the development of new modeling systems. The "Join the 2 percent" campaign further emphasizes the desire to broaden the base of financial support. Optional in-software advertising presents a direct and accessible way for a much larger portion of the user base to contribute to this very goal.

#Addressing Potential Concerns:

The primary concern with any form of advertising is its potential to be annoying or intrusive. The proposed models are designed to directly mitigate this by being entirely user-initiated or easily disabled. The focus would be on a seamless and respectful user experience, where the choice to view an ad is always in the hands of the user.

Furthermore, the open-source nature of Blender is one of its greatest strengths. The introduction of optional ads would not compromise this. The core software would remain free and fully functional for everyone, regardless of their participation in this program. The revenue generated would be transparently reported and directly funneled into the Blender Foundation to support the development and growth of the software for the benefit of the entire community.

I find it interesting that the first implementation you propose as "non-intrusive" is an ad at the startup of Blender, which you can then opt-out from in the preferences. In other words, you force ads on people and burry an option in the preferences to get away from it. That's considered intrusive.

Even the other ones, although they do not force ads on people, they still pester the user about it and then lock the user into watching an ad instead of using the software. People want to work using the tool, not be worked by the tool.

When it comes to providing means for people to help fund the project without paying with their money, ads are indeed a solution, and voluntarily watching ads has been done with success before:

There used to be a funding platform named Utip that allowed to fund creators and projects very similarly to platforms like patreon, except among the direct payment methods, it had the option to watch ads.
If the BF wants to, they could add an option on their Blender Development Fund page to "donate by watching an add".

I love the idea.
