Disambiguate select through and X-ray mode, or auto-toggle xray mode on select modes.
I appreciate the logic behind only being able to select backfaces if they are revealed by X-ray mode but, coming from Max which I have used for many years, I have become used to selecting parts of the mesh I cannot see. I'm surprised by it myself but apparently I have been guessing where polies are for years and never really thought about it and the lack of it seriously cramps my workflow.
To have to enable and disable X-Ray mode each time you want to select something that is occluded from your view but that you know is there is very inconvenient. The extra operations feel clunky and unnecessary. I know the polies are there, Blender; I can see them... in my miiiind.
I'd really appreciate it if there was a global toggle which controlled backface selection as in other software, separate from the X-ray mode which seems like much more of a visibility tool. Perhaps X-ray mode should always enable backface selection logically, but it should be possible to enable it separately as well.
Alternatively, a checkbox which turns on X-ray mode whenever a select mode is used would be fine as well if that is easier to implement.
This issue has been discussed here as well: devtalk.blender.org/t/decoupling-x-ray-and-limit-selection-to-visible/3498
And also here, where several devs disagree with the notion that I am putting forward here that the two behaviours should be separate: developer.blender.org/T56649
Ultimately, my argument is that a workflow with the two things disambiguated would be faster and those with top level blender fu would see an improvement in the speed and flow of their work as they learn how to... select the invisible!
May I thank any Blender dev that reads this for your hard work and anyone who takes the time to read.
