Change the Vertex Group "Rainbow" to a Scientifically Derived Colour Map

The dreaded rainbow (a.k.a. jet ) colour map is pretty much the worst there is. It isn't perceptually uniform or even ordered, and can be confusing not only to colour-vision deficient users.

There are tonnes of great maps available ( lajolla , batlow , thermal ,...), ideally there should be a dropdown in Preferences > Themes, that would allow users to choose.

Some of the best resources I could find are by Fabio Crameri:

You can change it in the user prefs {attachment CapturePNG}

* @crshanker66 * I guess suggestion is about change default color scheme (add presets?).

* @IIIFGIII * I am really used to the default. Colour schemes would be useful definitely and the ability to add custom colour scheme, export it and send it to other people like themes

* @crshanker66 * OK, tbh I totally missed that, I was looking for it in Themes like an idiot... (Should it be moved to themes then?) thanks! But it's still not enough, here's why:

  • You can't really make a truly perceptually uniform gradient from a simple Ramp, at least not easily, and this should be one of those things that are given. (I think)
  • Inverse gamma probably isn't applied correctly, so just like the red-green example - you don't even get the same gradient that you set (even with Display Device - sRGB ).
  • Yes, we need to have a couple of solid and useful options.

Maya uses optionally Kry and simple BW ramp, it's efficient and it's also simple to understand and recreate elsewhere.
