Triangulate Modifier - Option to Not Triangulate Quads

Many times we want get rig of N-gons in our models but want to preserve Quads as they are. Currently to accomplish this we must apply all modifiers and do that in Edit mode. I propose to create option to not triangulate quads. We can add it as another "quad method", named simply "None".

Would be be better/more flexible to have a side limit? (you could set to 4 for quads. maybe some people like to set a higher value).

That's great idea. One may want to preserve pentagons or bigger polygons too. Little recap from IRC:

  1. Triangulation methods for Ngons and Quads stay the same.
  2. Modifier get "Side Limit" slider which stands for "Don't triangulate faces with sides number equal or below Side Limit".

This mean user can set Side Limit to 4 and all quads will be preserved. Side Limit set to 6 won't triangulate polygons with 6 and less sides etc.

Not sure about that. Can't imagine how it can be useful. Selecting convex/concave faces in editmode will be nice but that's another thing.

developer.blender.org/D4367 I have submitted for a patch, give it many tokens so that it gets into the master branch faster :D

Still a great idea! I'd love to see that happen. Alternatively, a Quadify modifier would also be nice.

Technically, it is possible to triangulate using the decimate modifier set to .9999 and "triangulate" option on, but it would be nice to have more control over it too, so good idea!

Name it "Keep"

Yes! You kinda can do that already with selecting faces by sides and then triangulating in edit mode but having a modifier would be awesome.
