Blender Multiple Animations for Boids + (Mockup)

Trigger different animations for (rigged object) used in boids particles.

  • MOCKUP

Boids-Presentation.jpg

A simple use case is just simulating a huge flock of birds flying above the ground and landing (randomly).

Would be super helpful for more complex crowd simulations and there would not be much need for extremely expensive external tools at that point.

  • STEPS

1 Pick a particle state

2 Add & Choose the actions you want to use for that state

3 Set their specific influence and transition frames

waaay back in like... 2012 i scripted a version of this for a battle scene. python gets the transform and boid state for each particle, and uses that to drive an instanced mesh and blended nla strips. conceptually it worked well, but since each particle became an individual object, it definitely had limits in terms of how big you could realistically go.

That still sounds better than animating them by hand. Been there, done that.

Is this image part of an addon? if that's the case, can you please link it? Thanks in advance.

Nope, I just made it up in photoshop back then. More of a suggestion.

I think this particular use case could be solved with the interaction nodes (or particles nodes, idk i'm lost in how they dispatched nodes) of everything node project.

A state machine editor when you can trigger non-linear animations based on states could be the best way to do that, I think.

We just have to hope they will do something practical that have multipurpose behavior (like armory3d nodes).

Whichever is the best solution, and as long as there is one, I'm up for it.
