Improved Filtering of contents in the Outliner

It would be nice to add more granular filtering to the objects' contents in the Outliner, having e.g. the option to visualize only the material icon without the object data icon, disabling the modifiers but not the constraints etc.

Great post! I was just about to write up similar one about this same issue. Definitely needs to be fixed as the outliner is ridiculously cluttered. I was setting up a quick demo scene to show off the problem and just having 8 objects in the scene with a few materials, modifiers and animations already makes the list go off-screen.

This test was just for a super-simple test-scene as well, the outliner spirals out of control and becomes almost useless for any scene with more complex things like cars, spaceships or full environments.

The number one use-case of the outliner (for me at least) is to get an overview of the hierarchy of objects (for animation, export and/or other purposes) or do collection management and when there's a million irrelevant objects in the list you don't want nor need to see 99% of the time it makes it very difficult to use for this.

I'll attach my example here as well for good measure: imgur.com/a/KKBvLkD

Should be enough to drive the point home when 82% of the items in the list are mostly useless clutter.

Also side-note, might be worth moving this to the Outliner category instead of User-Interface (if possible).

Thanks! Edited category now, honestly I wasn't even aware it existed, either I default to UI or it was introduced later.

p.s. the imgur link seems to be broken

Ah, no worries. I couldn't find this post due to it being in UI instead of Outliner, so should be easier to find for anyone else as well now. Thanks for changing it.

The link for the image still seems to work for me. I've tried to upload the image to a few alternative site but my comments not allowed to go through if I add in the link so not sure what'd be a good alternative hosting site.

I definitely would like to be able to optionally filter out constraints for example. Outliner has many issues, but the clutter created by too many unnecessary items is the worst.
