Option to disable red/blue/green preview entirely in weight-paint mode
As a part of a workflow I am using weight paint to blend shape keys.
I find that the red/blue/green preview of the weight-paint mode to be unhelpful for this particular workflow.
At the moment it seems that the best that I can do is to change the color ramp under preferences to a single solid color but it would be much nicer if I could simply disable this entirely so that the model can be seen in the active viewport render mode (shaded / flat / textured / material / cycles render / wireframe / etc).

In 2.8, the weight ramp is part of the Overlay engine, which you can disable by going in the Properties region > Display > Only Render. From there (theoretically), you could use Eevee or Clay and you should see the material itself. However, at the current development state, doing this with any render engine other than Cycles makes the object invisible (at least on my side), so they will have to fix this bug. But don't report it ! It's too early to report bugs yet.
@Caetano Veyssières: I cannot wait for 2.8, there are so many good things happening.
Could you describe more specifically how the ability to visualize group weights is a hindrance? Perhaps this is more of a workflow issue where you're trying to do something in weight paint mode that would be better-suited in another mode.
@Jason van Gumster: It is visually cluttered making it difficult to see what the actual blended mesh looks like. Seeing the textured materials makes it possible to see how detailed areas of the mesh have been blended.
