Subdivide modifier exclude option

Didn't see this suggested already, so here goes. Would an option in the subdivide modifier to exclude geometry be possible? One option being subdivide by edge length, and another by vertex group perhaps. I can already guess that this would introduce bad topology, so i'm not sure this would worthwhile.
