Disable looping playback
This is very old request,
While its simple enough to use a python script to stop playback on the end frame, it really should be built-in. For some reason its often overlooked or hidden in video software too, whats with that?
it becomes frustrating to play the last few seconds of animation and have it jump back to the start, particularly when caching simulations. I'd be happy to see looping as a checkbox in playback settings.
Unfortunately hitting bake can be a bit crashy (that's a different issue) and 'cache to frame' always starts from the first frame. Disabling looping would allow an approach to baking (dynamic paint, hair etc.) that serves making refinements. But when looping, the cache is completely cleared once it bounces back.
Another use case scenario: Your presenting a work in progress, to your client or boss informally by hitting play and your grand ending is spoiled by your grand opening.

Also need a ping pong playback
I actually made a plugin for one-time playback and ping pong playback. I've released the code on github but it's undocumented. Do you guys think it's worth it to document it?
I'd be grateful for the link to the plugin / addon so that I can try it out. It's quite a useful feature hopefully it will get implemented in future releases.
I agree this would be super useful as a cacheing approach, I've thought of this too, and given the general difficulties and computation demands of complex simulations, especially in pausing/resuming, this would be a really helpful feature.
Added in #154987 - Anim: add loop modes to the playback popover - blender - Blender Projects
Adding a vote to this for creative reasons in addition to the cache-related that others have mentioned.
It can be hard to time out a chunk of animation when it keeps looping, as it turns into a kind of rhythmic pattern, and the brain starts to lose the ability to evaluate the motions independently of that loop.
For that reason, it's great to turn off looping, and hit space each time you want to see it.
