Screw Modifier - Angle Smoothing
The screw modifier gives you two options for smoothing - absolutely none, or everything.
Neither of these options is what the artist actually wants. The smoothing checkbox should be the Auto-Smooth option, with the angle limit.

Aren't you able to set the autosmooth angle in the object data tab in the first place? That's how it works with the bevel modifier.
I do not see such an option, when I'm applying the screw modifier to a spline object. If I've overlooked it, a screenshot would be appreciated. :)
nevermind, curve objects don't have autosmooth at all x) Maybe that could be added.
