Box select behavior (Backface selection) in preference

There should be a checkbox that whenever I use box select in edit mode, it temporarily turn on x-ray to select back faces and when I done, it turn off automatically. this way we have both option.

  1. Simple drag and select for not selecting back faces.
  2. Pressing B for Box select for selecting backfaces.

This functionality should be in the preferences so that those who don't want this can disable it.

An add-on has been suggested as a solution, but this add-on does not currently work with 3.0. The author seems to be unreachable since October. This is such a fundamental problem that Blender should incorporate it as a standard feature. Why does Blender force users to press shortcuts for no reason, every time? Do you really think that all users enjoy pressing the keyboard? Do other DCC tools ever require shortcuts that make no sense?

i know this tool was in blender before, but it bloats up the select box menu with 3 more icon and when I press W to select box mode I have to press it so many times, I don't want those 3 mode in select and box. I just want x-ray selection while pressing B key. blender should add this as a functionality in preferences.

Nice addon, did you try to pull request it to the blender code ?

Hi, I can't remember, but some of similar features was seen on developer.blender.org as a patch, but not accepted or reviewed.
