Texture Limit by Collections
Now that collections has there own properties, it would be nice if you could limit texture size based on collections.
I was thinking it could use a toggle to decide if the texture limiting should apply to all of the underlying hierarchy or only the direct "child objects" of the collection. If the "Include Child Collections" is enabled you could "reset" a child collection in the underlying hierarchy by selecting Texture Limit again, and set new settings for the rest of that "branch", or until Texture Limit is activated again on another child collection and so on.
Did not include a separation by viewport or render her, I guess it could be like in simplify(set limit for bothe or none), or it could be enabled separatly when you want to use a low limit for an entire hirarchy for the viewport for performanse reasons anyway, and just fine tune the render values. I guess there could also be a new option in the dropdown for "no change" as default to avoid bloating the interface with seperate sections for viewport and render, while still keeping the system flexible...

What if an object exists in more than one collection? Blender needs a concept of proper groups separate from Collections.
Good point. I am not sure about how everything would need to be handled in code, but I guess in that case the instance with the lowest amount of limiting would win. After all the main point in limiting textures is saving on memory usage, so limiting for some instances and not other instances of the same object would just use more memory. It might cause some confusion iguess, but should be the most "efficient" solution I guess.
I was not thinking about this initialy, but needs to be handled. The usecase I had in mind was more like if you have the same "type" of assets gathered in a collection you could break that up into collections of close up versions and middleground/background collections. For instanse if you have some premade 3d scanned people with high resolution textures you could separate the models you want in the forground to a collection with with no limiting, and have others in a collection with limiting textures for like a crowd in the background or something. Same would be for vegitation, if you need a limited amount of vegitation variants with high res in the forground, but more variety of low res texture vegitation in the background.
I guess having the option at "object level" might in some cases be less confusing then, but having it at collection level would make it more managable. maybe bothe would be nice ...
