Change ctrl+g to do something the average user would find useful.

Currently ctrl+g creates (empty) collections that are not associated with any scene and can only be seen by switching the Outliner to Blender File display mode.

I think anything would be more useful than this.

My personal preference would be for ctrl+g to create an Empty at the average center of the location of all currently selected objects and make it the parent of all currently selected objects.

It would also be nice if there was a new Empty shape type that automatically resized itself to encompass the bounding boxes of all of its child elements.

Select Empty > Properties > Object Data Properties > Display As: Bounding Box of Children

Even though the shape of the empty changes based on where it's children are located, it's origin point does not change from where it was originally located at the time of creation. If you want to change that you'll need to ungroup and regroup to get a new Empty with a new origin point based on the current location of the children.

I said all of that about the Empty origin point to reduce the amount of code that would need to be created because I know Empties can't have their origin point moved like other objects. But in many other programs with sensible groups like this you can relocate the origin of the "empty/locator/null/invisble" that is the parent of the grouped objects... Thought about this some more and realized it's not an issue with blender after all. You can just use the Affect Only: Parents option to move the Empty parent object without moving the children.

TL;DR: Ctrl+g should automatically create an Empty and parent any selected objects to it. This is what most other sane programs do. Example: youtube.com/watch

Try «Quick Instance» addon. Very useful!

Yes pleeeeaaasse! That was my first weird thing i noticed when i switched to Blender. I am an environment artist and therefore need to group and scale a lot and frequently. I would love for this to behave like the "industry standard"

That's really good idea!
