Global AOV mode for the Shader Editor
Currently the custom aov system is great, but there's no way to add an aov to all objects easily. Would it be feasible to implement a global AOV mode for the shader editor? AOV's defined in it could be used for all objects unless they have materials that write to the same AOV, in which case the material takes precedence.
It would save having to manually add an AOV output node to all materials when you want all objects to appear in the rendered custom pass. This suggested functionality would also make it easier to add custom AOV's to linked materials.
Currently the only way to achieve this is by rendering a second time with a material override, which isn't feasible most of the time due to long pre-render scene calculation.

Yeap.
My workaround for that was creating node group with AOV, and then adding it to all shaders. It is overwritten if you add AOV outut at top level.
That's a really good idea. PIty it still requires adding to all materials, and cant work with linked materials 👍
The only workaround at the moment seems to be a material override, but it's not suitable for my purposes as the scenes I'm working with generally have up to 20 unique render layer nodes in the compositor. Material overrides would mean I'd have to turn on the material override, and then re-render all scenes and viewlayers, resulting in 40 renders instead of 20. It's also impossible to do this during rendering via script due to access violation if changing scene properties whilst in the render thread.
YES!!!!!! Our studio wanted to use Blender for a project recently, but this shortcoming meant that we were unfortunately unable to.
We looked into using override materials, but the scene compilation per frame was so high that just to get the couple of custom passes we needed would have led to a massive increase in render time.
Blender's getting so close to being a viable tool for studio's, but not quite there yet. Keep up the good work though guys!
This will be an amazing addition. I hope it gets added very soon. 😊
