Rigify: More bones in the mouth area.

Hello.

I like Rigify a lot.

I like everything it gives, all the options, and how lite is. The rig always takes very few memory, so even working in large animations, fps remain high in viewport.

I simply love it, and I am seeing that since many artist are getting so used to it, they are even asking if Maya have something like this. LOL.

Ok. Im only trying to remark that when you get used to Rigify, is very good, and you don't want to use anything different, because you get used to its greatness.

But, the more I rig, pose and animate, the more I am discovering that has a flag. I wouldn't be saying this if this wouln't be like the 100th time I have thought about this, while working.

The mouth needs more bones.

Currently we have only 8 bones. 3 Up. 3 Down. 1 left. 1 right.

At the end, the animator will be struggling when trying to make in the mouth circular shapes, because you are going to obtain a lot of rect lines. And if you want precise mouth forms, corrective shapekeys are almost guaranteed.

I am asking to study the possibility to have, by default, more bones up and down.

Believe me, I have wait years to make this statement, until this has happened to me several times, because I wanted to learn first, If I could rig/animate/pose better, to make it not to happen. And to see if this was my fault. But, no. It's not me. Definetly, more bones are needed in the area.

I'm seeing the rig from Epic's metahuman for example. Mouth can do more things with much more bones.

I would expect that If much more people come to Blender, because it becomes even more mainstream, a lot of people are going to fight with this situation.

So I hope the Blender team can have this in consideration, and improve the number of bones in the mouth area, by default. Peace. 1_Meta.jpg

Do you mean more bones by default (I think you mentioned that) or the ability to add more bones? Adding more bones is actually possible since Blender 3.3 or so when they introduced the modular face rig types. Subdividing the mouth bones will now work out of the box. Understanding the rig type options can be challenging though.
