Timed Keypress (long-press / press-and-hold)

Proposal

New key event: Timed Keypress

Outcome: Works as normal key, but adds a secondary action if held for longer:

  • Press key = normal action
  • Hold key = secondary action

Implementation

Using a global preference, Timed Key Threshold , keymaps with timed event trigger would fallback to this value if user hasn't assigned per-key thresholds.

Discussion

Similar to existing dbl -press, my proposal would expand the keymap options.

There may be an argument for people with disabilities, where press-and-hold could potentially simplify many actions requiring modifier keys.

If the viewport is laggy how will it affect the perceived length required to activate a long press?

In that case it would perceive a long-press the same way it does for dbl-press assuming they're both timed events.

Otherwise I guess one might argue that a laggy viewport will always have adverse effects on any keypresses. Worst case nothing happens or it happens after a while like normal keys.

It might be a consideration to lock other triggers until the interval for the last timed keypress runs out, to prevent bottlenecked actions.
