clicking on set material geometry node to load that material in the shader editor

You can assign multiple materials to an object using geometry nodes without the need to add those materials in the object's material list (otherwise you wouldn't be able to use a geometry node modifier that assigns materials without first manually adding all materials the modifier will use to the object's material tab)

The problem is, if you don't have materials assigned to the object in the usual way, then you can't see them in the shader editor without assigning them to the object first.

In cases like this it would be great if clicking any of the material nodes would also display that material in the shader editor, so that it can be tweaked without any messing about.

First you'd need to request allowing the shader editor to show a material even if no object is selected. People have been asking for that for like a decade.
