Add and Rename Marker as Default
When adding a Marker to the timeline the popup for renaming could open automatically. If you don't want to rename and keep the default just click away.
Having to select the marker each time you add it is unintuitive since they are useful for organization and reference.
Would also be great to be able to color code them (and change the color upon adding too). :)

That sounds like a backwards logic to me. You never enter renaming mode when you create any kind of asset or data in Blender, why would this change for markers?
The only issue I see here is markers being unselected after creation, because that's what prevents from interacting with them right after creation, while any other newly created data or asset is selected on creation in Blender (with a few exceptions that make sense, like text and texture data blocks), so it would be helpful and logical to have markers selected on creation by default.
Besides, markers have other quirks right now:
All this should be changed for ease of use and consistency, IMHO.
One example: Move to Collection > New Collection > It automatically enters renaming mode so you can properly organize your collections. It's the same logic for organization. If you're creating a maker to save info on the timeline you'd probably want to name it properly.
I do agree Markers could be much improved. So many possibilities!
@-L0Lock- I'm going to be honest here, I have no clue what's going on here. Maybe we're using different versions (I'm on 3.5.0) or maybe one of us has an addon enabled that changes things, but I don't see any of the quirks you mentioned. I just tested, and in my blender:
Markers are selected on creation. Clicking a marker doesn't deselect keyframes. I can select multiple markers with shift click or b to box select. Renaming them is F2 which is the normal shortcut.
Maybe I enabled something in the settings? I don't remember changing any settings that would affect this though...
Huh interesting, I've not created a collection this way for a long time, I just make new collections from the outliner and then move stuff around.
Though that sounds like a special case here, we are not just creating a new data block, we are moving data to an non-existing data bloc. I guess it makes more sense here to avoid moving stuff to an "unknown" collection.
But thinking more about it we also have the possibility to give a name to a new image data bloc, though I suspect the reason is mostly because we also have lots of other options to chose as well.
I retried on 3.5 with factory settings. Markers are indeed selected on creation, and I can shift LMB to select multiple markers, indeed. But.... The other quirks are still there and I found even more 🙃
I think the animation editors papercuts just ended so it's probably too late to send those there.
You have to have your cursor in the bottom marker area when you start your box. If it's in the keyframe area it won't select markers. That's not really that intuitive, so maybe it should be changed? It is consistent with most other marker actions though. Renaming, moving with G etc all require your mouse to be in the marker area.
I just tried with factory settings and you're right. I think it worked with my settings because I have keyframe selection as RCS but marker selection is LCS so they don't interfere with each other. Sorry, I probably should have tested that before posting my original comment.
I agree with points 3, 4 and 5.
I kinda get this honestly. In both cases, I think it pops up so that if you have a lot of markers stacked together the one you are on or have selected can be read. They are already visually differentiated by having the selected marker be a brighter white and having a filled in triangle. Also, you can already change its color to orange if you want in Themes>Dope Sheet>Marker Line Selected. Weirdly though, it seems you can only change the color of the line and not the triangle or text.
On my side it doesn't work, it doesn't even draw a rectangle, it just deselects markers.
You're using 'B' to box select right?
Nope, LMB
That's probably your problem right there
No, I should be able to box select with LMB just as much as I am able everywhere else.
You can't box select with just LMB in places where LMB is used by another action. In this particular instance, LMB dragging is used for scrubbing the timeline and I'd rather have scrubbing than box select so I gotta agree with their choice on this one
Not in the marker area.
Ok agree to disagree I guess :)
Sure, but we are talking about facts here, not opinions. At least I am.
I guess you use Blender in RMB select? Because it has a very different keymap and is not the default factory setting.
With factory settings, you don't move the playhead by LMB dragging in the markers area, it will just deselect markers. In the main area, it does a box select. The only place where LMB dragging moves the playhead is the keyframes header. You can Shift RMB drag in the marker and main areas to move the playhead.
In fact, In RMB select, you can RMB drag in the markers area to select markers. Just as well as you can do it in the main area to select keys.
Another reason why LMB drag should be a thing in LMB selection.
You can use facts to help make your side of the debate stronger, but at the end of the day, the question of which way is "Better" is an opinion. In your opinion, the facts in favor of your argument outweigh the facts against it.
Yes I use RCS. Honestly even though I know RCS isn't the default setting, I thought most people used RCS since it was the default up until relatively recently and most blender users most likely started using it with RCS.
Either way, we are way outside the scope of the original proposal and I feel like if we continue this discussion it should be in a new proposal specifically for this topic.
