I propose the speaker object be removed. It's more trouble than it's worth to maintain and update, and sound should be done in the edit / post stage.

I agree that it's quite a bit of trouble. But i like the idea in theory that you could have directional sound in your scene without having to use external audio editing software, if it would get some love someday.

... because re-rendering the entire scene just to change something in the audio track, instead of doing sound externally, is everyone's idea of a great time...

Oh god please don't. I use it in my add-on for live spatial audio.

the speaker objet uses the NLA, which will be removed by the animation team in future versions. This was an interesting feature for the bge for game and RT applications. Since 2.8, it has had no convincing use.

Could you provide a source?

check code.blender.org/2024/02/animation-2025-progress-planning/ and others workshop, talks Sorry for the delay...

Idk about the whole removing NLA part but It would be amazing for them to look into fixing the audio speakers as part of the animation overhaul. As a blender user for like 5+ years, I had never used nor heard of the speaker objects till about a few weeks ago when I saw some clickbait youtuber talk about it and it blew me away on the possibilities it could give if fixed. Seeing how they are trying to intigrate the video editor into blender now, I don't see why it should be out right removed especially since if fixed it can help with spatial audio which isn't the easiest nor quickest to do in a flat 2d timeline...

The animation dev team aims to move the NLA features into the animation layers. I don't know what to think about that either. I like the NLA and find it very logical and simple, unlike many things in the animation system. But there are also too many editors just for animation... Anyway The spatial sound feature was implemented a long time ago and is no longer maintained. The original developer used the NLA for this because it was available (I guess). The possibilities are modest. Only one sound per speaker. No directivity, reflections, etc., just a volume calculation based on distance. No separate audio outputs that would allow processing in audio software.
