Why do we need to reinvent the wheel again? Column is SHIFT select! Amen!

Hoi knows that with the Box Selection. Not intuitiv imho. Holding Shift is very common though.

To be fair, box selection exists in the Outliner, so your example isn't great. Not that I don't agree that <kbd>Shift</kbd> selection wouldn't be nice to have, but the reality is that it's not as slow as you're showing.
Also, this has been proposed multiple times here. It might be better to search for one of those proposals and add to them.
