Make selection counts stand out and be readable at a glance

In Blender 2.7, the counts of selected vertices/edges/faces don't stand out very well from the rest of the numbers in the info bar. When I'm working my way around an object and welding vertices, I want to check how many vertices are selected each time before I hit Alt-M, but doing so takes a long time because the counters aren't readable at a glance. It's hard for my eye to find the right number among all the rest in the Info bar. If you have a lot of welds to do, this problem adds significant time and makes the process more tedious than it should be.

I'd like it if, when you have something selected in Edit mode, the counters would appear in bright print or otherwise somehow stand out from the rest of the info crammed into the info bar. For example, if I have selected 2 vertices out of 18,432, the "2" should appear distinctly brighter than the "/18,432" that follows it, so it can be read and understood at a glance.

It would be a great bonus if selection counts could be color-coded. Since Blender doesn't have distinct colors representing vertices, edges, and faces (and we don't want to re-use the red, green, and blue of the axes), maybe the count of selected vertices could be bright yellow, the count of selected edges could be bright orange, and the count of selected faces could be a somewhat darker orange. Whatever.

But color-coding isn't strictly necessary. Just making the selection counts stand out visibly from the rest of that area's data would be a great help.

This proposal could really use a mock-up. Can you provide an image that shows what you'd like to see?
