New Feature: Grease Pencil Strips in the VSE

Grease Pencil Strips.png

The Problem

Adding drawings or annotations to sequences/shots in the VSE is currently extremely limited. There is no way to draw an annotation over a shot and limit it to a set number of frames or relate it to a specifc shot/strip.

Instead you are forced to display the annotation on either a single frame OR on all of frames of the sequence (via the lock button). There are no other options.

The Solution

Creating a new VSE strip type: Grease Pencil Strips

This would be an extremely useful feature for animatic production, 2d animation, edit reviews and animation direction.

  • 3D Animators could draw intended lines of action over blocking shots and have them displayed as a persistent objects on the timeline
  • Animation Directors could provide notes and feedback, down to specific frame ranges, drawn directly over each shot
  • 2D Animators could quickly block out their shots and move them around on a timeline without having to create and navigate in/out of individual scenes
  • Storyboard Artists and people producing animatics could easily produce storyboard edits and 2d animatics without getting bogged down in the technicalities of 3d

Blender needs this feature! Please upvote, share on social media and comment if you agree. Let's get the developers to consider this proposal.

There is no need for special strip, You can simple add a color strips and use the Annotate tool on them

Really? I've just tried this and it doesn't seem to work. Could you point towards a video or article that shows what you're saying in action please?

Hi, I've tried several different things to repeat what you're saying here but the annotations don't "stick" to the colour strip. You can't move them around with the strip or change the in and out points as I've proposed. Unless I'm missing something?
