Treating 3d "solid" like solids

I'm new to 3d design. i'm from a traditional art background and am older than most beginners. My frustrations are with the apparent situation that blender doesn't always respond to my interaction as though the object I'm working on is really solid. Two examples. In edit mode of a sphere if I select several vertices, the program may select several on the backside of the object and these are manipulated along with the ones I'm viewing. This happens at times other than in wire frame mode when I would expect it to select all. The second example is during a review of the object in a render mode and the light seems to "shine through" the object in places creating unusual highlights on surfaces that should be mostly in shadow. The first of these is very frustrating for a newbee and the second is a bit jarring. If there's a setting I can change that will fix these things please point me in that direction, otherwise I would hope that development would consider fixes for this in future iterations. Thanks.

If you are in solid mode you shouldn't be able to select backside vertices. In wireframe mode or XRay you can see and select backside vertices.

Light leakage is a realtime rendering issue. I am not yet a specialist with eevee but adding thickness to your models should alleviate this issue. Try the solidify modifier and add 2 cm of volume to meshes that experience light leakage.

Alternatively you could switch to the cycles render engine which realistically simulates the behaviour of light but needs a lot more rendertime.
