Rename by double clicking in the 3d viewport.

Double clicking an object should display its name in the viewport.
Double clicking its name in the viewport should open the rename window.

(ooh, I just discovered that double right clicking an object goes into local view!)

F2 works fine more me on my Macs I use Flour to auto switch from media to function keys in Blender and have no issues. Double clicking to rename seems unintuitive to me. Double click in the Outliner on the other hand makes sense and works fine.

Shimoon

Why not using the "F2" key?

* @Shimoon *
Macbook: fn+F2 does nothing in Blender. F2 adjusts screen brightness.
Windows Laptop 1: fn+F2 does nothing in Blender. F2 adjusts screen brightness.
Windows Laptop 2: fn+F2 does nothing in Blender. F2 adjusts screen brightness.
Windows Laptop 3: fn+F2 does nothing in Blender. F2 adjusts something in Windows.
Windows Laptop 4: fn+F2 activates rename in Blender... sometimes. F2 activates rename in Blender... sometimes, the rest of the time it adjusts screen brightness.

* @Shimoon * I think what I'm really asking for is for double clicking with left mouse button to be an actual thing and then people can assign it to do whatever they want.

Shimoon

* @thinsoldier * I see.. Im affraid that is going to involve changing quite a lot of stuff to fix that on laptop (actually I dont have that issue even with my laptop, F2 rename things as expected)

* @thinsoldier * Fn key is not accessible by software Its your on your side that you inverted Fn+Fkeys in your system settings.

do you use right click select or what? otherwise it makes no sense

thinsoldier Author

* @ThinkingPolygons * I do not use right click select. Why does it not make sense? Currently double clicking an object in the 3d viewport does nothing. I think it should do something useful.

thinkingpolygons

* @thinsoldier * because double clicking an object in the 3d viewport is used for "depth" selection. Also just right click and choose "rename active object" is good enough. (this is all in left click select)

thinsoldier Author

* @ThinkingPolygons * Incorrect. Single clicking multiple times without moving the mouse is depth selection. Double clicking is just does it faster (too fast to be useful in my opinion).

thinkingpolygons

* @thinsoldier * that's the point. you can't double click, because it will activate the depth selection. I thought you would understand what I said.

thinsoldier Author

* @ThinkingPolygons * They can add an intentional double click detection to the left button. They have it on the right button.

thinkingpolygons

* @thinsoldier * they don't want to sacrifice anything. this is why double click to select an edge loop was removed. they prefer depth selection over everything
