Painted mask should be the AFFECTED area, not unaffected
Hi guys, I think that this is something that some programs just copied Zbrush at doing but it makes absolutely no sense and so I would like to propose this change. Its simply that you should, by default, not have to invert the mask if you want to move / do something with the masked area. It's more intuitive to mask an area and move that, than it is to mask everything BESIDES the area you want to move.
Usually what happens is we mask and then invert and then move, this extra step can easily be removed.
EDIT:
A better way to phrase this is why have masking and not a selection in sculpt mode? Selection is more consistent with edit mode, and in most use cases treating masking as selecting would reduce the need for inverting.
Let me know what you guys think. Thank you.

You mask areas that should not be affected. This is not a Blender term, it is standard English. You would be pretty pissed off if you sent your auto to a paint shop and they only sprayed the windows and chrome parts!
maybe have negative mask mode ?.
* @peter.boos * I'd be more than happy to have a checkbox in Preferences for "Masked represents active"
I kinda agree here, 90% of time when I mask something I imediately invert mask. For me, masking is like "Selection tool" when I mask something, it means I want to work inside the area that I just masked.
At least there should be a toggle to invert mask functionality like Photoshop
* @Vas * Thanks for the image and the concise explanation! I wish I had worded my original post like this :)
Hey guys, I see what you are saying but that is kind of focusing on the terminology and not the point of the tool. What i am talking about is basically selecting polygons vs selecting an area in sculpt mode - it is much more useful to be able to manipulate the area you have selected. For example polygon selection does what is expected, i select an area and thats the area I can move. I understand that masking is a totally different word and so it might make more sense in real life, but when I am in sculpt mode and I want to pose an arm, i think it makes sense to "select"/"mask" the arm and then immediately move it instead of having to mask everything besides the arm. Why even have masking, should it just be called selecting in sculpt mode then? And we paint a "selection"?
my goal really is just to minimize steps and based on my experience, i have to hit that invert hotkey way more than i should have to
No, because you're masking! When you mask you don't want to affect that area. On the other hand, masking could be coupled with a "select area" tool that does just what you request. All this seems trivial wording neatpicking, but lately seemes it is better to stay focused on word meanings and keep consistent with what is what, also in other softwares.
* @ Lsscpp * I'm totally fine with a select tool. It would make it consistent with edit mode. At the end of the day like you said, i dont care what its called, but I do know that every time I "mask" an area I hit ctrl+I to invert it about 99% of the time. And I think that is the case for most people's sculpting experiences, even Raf Grasseti's latest Zbrush tutorial you see him always have to press ctrl+I. Let's remove the need for that extra step! That's all this post was suggesting really, the rest is semantics :)
* @ Lsscpp * image this tho
* @Vas * This is perfect!
