Texture paint layers

Is there any chance to add classic layers to a texture paint mode? The problem with the layered workflow now is that the artist can see only one active layer on the UVs (in a 2D view). As a person who primarily works with hand-painted textures for many years, I can say for sure, that drawing in 3D view is not the only thing that needed. There are often appear some complex areas on the model that should be done in 2D view. But by seeing only one layer it becomes tricky and quite complicated. So there are actually two ways to make a life of texture artist easier. The best option, that I believe every experienced texture artist will appreciate is adding classic layers right in the paint mode. We've got used to them. They appear in every painting tool and program. The second way might be easier to provide, and it still will be fine to work with: just add an option to display a final complex texture in the 2D view, so we could paint the layers by seeing the whole picture. Thanks P.S. I love how the painting mode feels in a blender. It is hard to explain by words, but different painting software gives a very different feeling of the brush behavior. But this good part is eclipsed by the lack of technics for painters: layers, masks, rotating of 2D canvas could make Blender one of the strongest tools for cartoon texturing.
