Duplicating object with shift + D makes unnecessary material douplicate.
Duplicting objects with shift + D make unnecessary material duplicates. Expected behavior is to be able to duplicate geometry without creating additional material duplicates. I dont see any situation where it would be actually useful to have this duplicated material. I am aware that there are ways to merge it back or do instance duplicate then single user but all these solutions make simple operation overly complicated. I think there should be alteast option instead to reuse existing materials when duplicating.

It is an option.
Preferences -> Editing -> Objects -> Duplicate Data - uncheck Material.
This is a great tip; but in cases like this, it may not be very convenient to have to be switching between Preferences' settings so often.
Thus, the next level, wouldn't it be to have such settings available in the Adjust Last Operation Region --immediately popping up after the Duplication?
Of course, it's not only about the Materials; other Object properties (e.g., Object Modifiers) would have, ideally, the same dynamics when Duplicating. All of those Duplicatable Objects properties, if I'm not wrong, are also found as Checkbocks at that Preferences place; ideally, each of them would share a spot in the Adjust Last Operation Region in my point of view.
I'd suggest the author of the proposal, to update it, with the concept of using Adjust Last Operation Region, since there exist a safe workaround already, but it's just not that agile as it could become.
The info is not really accurate. This happens with copy/paste, not with Duplicating.
Just a note: Duplicating Objects with all the Materials can be useful sometimes. It can be as tedious to clean up the Materials Panel of the new Object, than it can be to bring a lot of them back in the case they weren't Duplicated along the Duplicated Object and we need them.
