about link......

Hi, blender

We are creating animations using a link system. However, due to the limitations of the link system, the progress of animation work is slowing down, and what we want is to be able to create and use shape keys when working by loading a collection that includes rigging in link modeling, and further modify the weight. I want a future where I can live.

I can't say about issues, but I recommend change titles when sending ideas and proposals here. Something more clear than just "about something..." So it's more clear to everybody, what is maybe the issue.

@hongjuni, I do similar work so I think I understand what you're suggesting, though a clearer explanation might help others who aren't sure what you're suggesting:

  1. You mention shape keys. AFAIK it's not possible to add a shape key to the mesh linked from a library. That makes it impossible to add corrective shape keys to a mesh for a certain scene, which is a major limitation. Is that what you mean?

Backgrounder: When you animate a rig, sometimes you hit poses which deform the mesh so it looks unnatural. In the animation industry, standard fix is to apply a corrective shape key to make the deformation look natural. But a problem with Blender is you can't add a corrective shape key (for that matter, any shape key!) to a linked mesh. The workaround (which is horrible) is to export that pose and generate the corrective shape key (which is only useful for that specific scene) in the library itself, which means your library file fills up rapidly with scene-specific junk. That solution works, but it's horrible! It would be far better if you can add a corrective shape key to a linked object - so you can create the corrective shape key in the scene.

  1. Weight. Are you talking about Vertex Group weighs, or the shape keys themselves? Unclear.

TL;DR: Currently you can animate shape keys of a linked mesh, but you can't add new ones. That's it, right? If that's it you can upvote this proposal which already calls for that (Item #8): blender.community/c/rightclickselect/k795

Correct me if I'm wrong, but performance issues should be sent to BUG report where they can replicate the issue, track the problem and fix the code, so this is the first step.

About your idea, you should write something:

Propose to update link system feature OR Expansion of link features.

I suggest to add shape keys support for external linked files when they are placed in the host file, this let the user fix any little issue during the final step of the project, and what more you suggest.

But maybe this feature is never included because the main propose of link stuff is have different people working in the same "file" at same time, this way, 3 persons can work with rigging, another one with modeling and etc, until things are glued together.
