Decimate Modifier, Specify Face Count
Current Cons:
- A guessing game for specific/desired values unless you want to do extra math.
- dragging can become slow for heavy objects so judging face count via slider in realtime isn't an option.
Fix, add the ability to double click the Face Count: # and type in your desired value. Or somehow combine ratio and face count together or next to each other.

Yes! For example in 3ds max this works by precomputing once and keeping a kind of cache structure, so at this point changing the value is real-time (if no changes on original topology) and this system allows for percent or face number decimation. Other software do it in similar way.
Triangle budget is the typical request in real life projects but more than simplify tris count calculation this can reduce time lost adjusting values on heavy operations.
I'm quite sure that the face count form decimation algorithm is only available after the decimation has been done. The only way to get an accurate face count is to actually run the decimate. So, it's not posible to have setting for face count.
Or in theory, it could be possible iteratively, but that would mean that the decimate operation would be run multiple times, and settings would be adjusted after each decimation. That would be terrible slow.
the geometry for this would look horrible.
