Tiled/Sliced Calculation for "Mesh to SDF Grid" Node (Speed Boost)
The current Mesh to SDF Grid node (introduced in 5.0) causes system freezes when processing large objects (e.g., 1m+) at high resolutions (e.g., 0.1mm or 0.01mm) because it attempts to calculate the entire grid as a single, massive block. I propose a "Tiled/Sliced Calculation" feature that breaks the bounding box into smaller sub-grids, calculates them sequentially, and provides a way to join them back together.
Description: Sliced Calculation: Add an option to the "Mesh to SDF Grid" node to divide the target volume into a user-defined number of slices or tiles (e.g., dividing a 2m volume into 10 smaller parts). This would prevent RAM spikes and system "freezing" by only processing one segment at a time. Merging Workflow: Allow these calculated sub-grids to be combined into a single SDF volume using a dedicated "Join SDF Grids" node or via the SDF Grid Boolean (Union) node. Dynamic Resolution: Implement a feature to change the resolution of an SDF Grid after it is already loaded or generated, without requiring a full recalculation from the original mesh source. This would function like a "Resample Grid" node to optimize performance during look-development.
Why this is needed: High-precision volumetric modeling is currently restricted by hardware memory limits. By allowing "tiled" generation, artists can create ultra-detailed SDF models on consumer hardware without the software becoming unresponsive. When you slice it to smaller blocks then you can do it one after another with some time breaks.
