Typing in math operators ex: * + - /, in the node search brings up the appropriate nodes
It would be great to type
*
and get the Multiply nodes instead of typing the word "multiply".
I suspect others also think about the math symbol, not the word, so this helps with mental friction (I also type "minus" a lot instead of "subtract").
The math, comparison and bitwise operators are obvious choices:
+, -, /, &, |, ==, <, >, <=, >=, %
Probably
//
for Divide Floor since that's in Python.
^
for power makes sense and/or
**
taking, again, from Python.
Similarly, it would be great to be able to type
1-
and get a subtract node with 1 in the top slot and connecting to second slot.
Related is this suggestion for an expression node blender.community/c/rightclickselect/2g6W which also mentions the Quick Maths plugin, both of which are valuable but I imagine this would be much simpler and is still useful.

I love the idea of being able to type a simple expression in to find the correct node.
I feel like it would work very well to detect what the user wants depending on what they type, for example:
a number by itself could get a value node with that number
a number with commas could be a vector combine node with those values
dragging from a socket, operator number could put the noodle in the top, and number at bottom, whereas number operator could put the noodle in the bottom slot instead.
this could make things so much faster in the node editors
ooh I especially like this if you already have a math node or a vector math node down, and you open the operation menu, pressing one of these keys should grab the correct operation: + - * / = (equal to) < > .(dot product) X(cross product), ^ (power) % (modulo) ~ (compare) etc etc
I think yes also the current way of searching is weird, if i shift+a to click search, it doesn't have all math operation, while if i just drag the node wire to empty space, i have another search menu with option to spawn a math node directly in multiply, divide or whatever math operation. I feel both should be unified.
