hello there

it would be amazing , especially if it could be done afterwork , in the compositor as a node !

I don't think that this is an open source project. And blender by it's nature requires open source projects.

Not open source so it's not going to happen. Furthermore, for something like this to be really actionable, you need to describe how you expect it to work, whether in the compositor or not. "Make it better" or "add this thing" isn't particularly helpful.

@Jason van Gumster: I don't know to what extent it qualifies as open but Ton seems excited about it being compatible with GPL twitter.com/tonroosendaal/status/1029752422485254144 developer.nvidia.com/optix

@Wo! 262: Ah. For some reason, I wasn't aware that the denoiser was part of Optix. It's nice that it's GPL compatible. Would be nicer if it wasn't hardware-locked, though.

Guess it just means that someone has to be interested in coding it. :)

I agree that Cycles needs better denoiser methods. Even though this one is not open source, something like this or other methods are needed, so +1 to your proposal

I don't like the Denoiser node that people keep asking for, though. The current custom made denoiser nodes aren't that good. And the more advanced and precise you want the denoiser to be, the lower access to render information that you need, information beyond just what can be saved in an EXR, and a node that goes beyond reading 2d pixels. Creating a new file format and a new node that's not even about compositing just to denoise as a postprocess is too much effort. (Although you could go full AI if you just save the noisy pixels, but the AI will hallucinate fake detail)

A good alternative is to save both the noisy render and the denoised one to let you mix and composite how you please, and guess what?? It being implemented!!!! :D developer.blender.org/D3608
