Industry standard axis orientation option (Y up axis, Z depth axis)

Blender axis are not compliant with software industry standards in VFX and animation.

It creates issues with exports, OSL, and most importantly users habits.

It would really help everyone if there was an OPTION to toggle the axis mode to match the industry standard.

Her is a list of the main DCC (don't mention unreal or co, they are game engine, Blender is not so it doesn't compare since 2.8)

Y up axis DCCs:

  • Maya
  • Houdini
  • Katana
  • Cinema 4D
  • Zbrush
  • Modo
  • Softimage
  • Clarisse
  • Lightwave 3D
  • 3d Coat
  • Mudbox

Z up axis

  • 3ds Max
  • Blender

Duplicate of this proposal . Short answer: There actually is no "industry standard" for axis orientation.

When 90 percents of industry softwares (and the big players all together in those 90 percents) share the same convention/choice, it is called an industry standard , Jason that is even EXACTLY the definition of industry standard ...

The person who down-voted an option proposal that would totally benefit Blender integration into pro environment really doesn't understand this hurts Blender.

PS: I even asked as an ---option--- (see title) so it wouldn't even bother your little life, so what's your problem with that request?

* @mfx * Please read the lengthy discussion in the proposal I linked to.

And, for what it's worth, I never downvoted your proposal.

Maya has Z-up option. Houdini user base is so small. Why would Blender need to change? Ask Maya/Houdini guys to change to Z-up.

This is driving me crazy! We keep exchanging stiff from Blender to Maya to Houdini and everything breaks because it this. At least give us the option. In Maya you can choose.

Blender_Bob

yes yes yes yes please! There's a reason why it's called zDepth. And when you output a point position pass in Blender, the colours are all wrong because of that. It should be an option. This way people can work any way they want. I want Y up.
