extrude option for displacement modifier

It would be great if you could extrude based on a texture rather than just moving points (displace).

This would mean for example if you had a black and white image, you could trace the black and white image and save as an svg, and then kinfe project the svg edges onto a plane, and then extrude with smooth edges (because the edges would already follow the countours of the image...rather than having jagged edges).

IMHO it is more a job for the Solidify modifier since it does extrude the mesh and already has vertex groups to restrict the area of effect.
The only issue is, when you use is with a vertex group, the edge of the limit is "bridged" to the next vertices instead of being extruded from the vertex group.

I guess a little rework and a checkbox to switch between the two behaviors would do the trick.

* @-L0Lock- * There's one problem that blender has, and it's a pretty major problem...it only has vertex groups. If it had face groups, then your solution would be ideal. Edge groups would also solve a lot of problem with the bevel modifier, but that's a different matter I guess.

I don't understand why you need this if you have a .svg file you can just import, project and modify it as you wish?

* @Beau Gerbrands * for complex svg files with overlapping paths...there's no way for blender to know what should be filled and what should be a hole.

I've temporarily worked around it by writing an asset in Houdini though, so no biggie. Would still be a nice option for blender to have though.
