Nice. Thanks for pointing that out. Of course it cannot be used as a modifier that way. Which would be a general wish from me, to have an interface to add custom modifiers from addons.
@1loginlogin321:
Houdini has openvdb remesh, yet they added instant meshes... 😉

It is opensource and it would definately be an upgrade to the "Remesh" modifier. The workflow with the control points would be tricky to implement, but worth it.

I saw an add-on some long time ago that integrated it into blender, but I was never able to find a download link to it anywhere, unfortunately. Hopefully this offer gets picked up!

Unless the dev which implement it got some trick to mitigate the "not very desiderable symmetry", nonetheless will be very good for asymmetrical meshes.

Great that there's code out there and that it appears to be GPL compatible (there's one condition in the license that might be a little troublesome, but I don't know for sure). However, it would be better to flesh out this proposal more. How would it work in Blender's interface? How would Blender users use it and control it?
It's nice that there's functional back-end code here, but that's only half a proposal. For this to be really actionable, it would be best to include a mock-up that shows how you'd expect users to interact with this feature, using Blender's interface principles.

Maybe to be part of Remesh modifier or as new modifier. More difficulty would be to create curves widget which would determine topology guide on the surface.
Maybe grease pencil could be useful to create orientation and position field brushes.

Can't speak for the original poster, but I had in mind to use it in the modifier stack, providing improved versions of Remesh and Displace.
@Jason van Gumster:
Hi... About the implementation, I guess the devs know better, right? 😉.... But yeah, like the other comments, I think as a modifier would be the best approach, since this is nothing more than an auto retoplology algorithm like the remesh...

The screenshot shows some additional controls that go a bit beyond what we normally see in a general modifier. Would all of those controls be there, or do you think some of them might be unnecessary?
Regarding the license, like I said, I think it's OK. The non-endorsement clause seemed to stick out a little oddly to me, but that was just a quick glance of it.

Not sure... Most of the controls there seems useful, so it's hard to say... Maybe the devs can judge it better...
Also both 3d coat and houdini they have a slightly different implementations... Check those videos:
@Jason van Gumster:
The feature to tweak the orientation field, like they do in the vid with a freehand-drawing tool, would certainly be desirable. Lacking such a tool, I guess a per-edge flag or value (of the original mesh) would be good enough.

It would be useful to have dynamesh equivalent of Zbrush in 2.8.

Wow! 3 years old, and I didn't know about it. Yes, we need that. Would be great if it could be made to work with True Displacement.
But beside that, this Github code likely could be wrapped into a plugin.
well you can sleep long years
+1 Moreover it's all in C. There is also an interesting project here BTW: youtube.com/watch

didn't test it myself but judging by this topic blenderartists.org/t/addon-openvdb-remesh/1102023/8 openvdb solution is much better

License: It's LBNL BSD, right? According to Fedora it is GPL-compatible: fedoraproject.org/wiki/Licensing:Main
