Add Copy / Paste mesh to new object

Hi,

I’m currently wraping my head around something very, very simple. Right now, if you want to copy a mesh part from one object to a new object, the process is convoluted for no apparent reason. For example, you need to follow these steps:

  • Select object
  • Enter Edit Mode
  • Select desired mesh part
  • Press Shift + D
  • Press Enter
  • Press P
  • Press Enter

What’s worse is that new object is still linked to the original. You now still have to follow another sequence only for unlinking.

Would it be more effective like this instead:

  • Select object
  • Enter Edit Mode
  • Select desired mesh part
  • Press Ctrl / Command + C

Then, one of these:

  • Press Ctrl / Command + V (paste to new object, NO LINK)
  • Press Ctrl / Command + Shift + V (paste to same object)

What do you guys think?

I agree that many things, not just part of mesh can be just copypasted.

Also try to select both objects and enter edit mode. It is easier to move, rotate and snap part before it will be transferred to new mesh.

Also you can macro all sequence (duplicate, separate, origin to object). Almost all actions go to console.

Actually free keKit addon got that working. However it could be faster, like in other applications. Think its super essential and badly missing.

Thanks for the keKit addon! It helps a lot! I still dont understand why blender lacks the copy-paste polygon function

I think it has to do on how Blender does copy things. It works different depending to the area you use the command. So if you select nodes and move the mouse, it may not copy the nodes, because you already out of focus. In other apps, the copied element has a tag, about what it is, so you can hit copy on an object, then copy on a text and still both can be pasted in different areas. I guess development is not there. Indeed the copy and paste in Blender often fails. Got that a lot when copy nodes.

Yes! Also this:

We should be able to copy and paste ONLY the objects we've selected, not 100,000 trees in a Forrest where we only want to copy one for instance. What we have selected, not everything in the scene. It's crazy how much attention all this stuff needs and is not receiving.

I think they need to give the whole thing an overhaul, because copying and pasting in blender is in dire need of attention across the board.

Totally agree. There are a few bizarre omissions from Blenders basic toolset - this is one. Copying, cutting and pasting should be super quick and easy. This would add a ton of flexibility. Got my vote!
