Connect arbitrary components tool/command
I'm not a fan of the knife tool in either Blender or Maya.
In Maya I usually don't need it because there is a command to connect any arbitrary components.
In Blender I can manage with subdividing edges and then using J to join the new verts but it would be so much nicer to be able to select and edge and a then a vert and press J to have them automatically connect even though they are not the same type of component.

It's "vertex connect" tool...
* @Alberto * It only works with vertices. I'm saying have a connect anything to anything tool like in other programs.
* @Alberto * youtube.com/watch The first several examples can be done with Blender's subdivide command. The middle examples can be done with Blender's vertex connect tool.
The last example requires multiple steps in blender:
select edge,
right click,
subdivide to get a new vertex in the middle of the edge,
switch to vertex mode,
select the new vertex,
select another vertex,
use vertex connect tool

I repeat, use vertex connect, not vertex connect path.
* @Alberto * I don't know what the difference is then. Where are those in the menu? What is the keyboard shortcut for each? I've been using the J key.
I've been experimenting some more and it seems like this won't be possible because even when you have both vertex and edge mode active at the same time, selecting a vertex and then an edge result in 3 vertices being selected. Blender impressively handles verts, edges, and faces separately when deleting them but apparently not when selecting them.
