Display Waveform as a default option
It would be super-awesome to have "Display Waveform" as something you check as a default under Preferences.
That, and people editing voice-over videos usually like to have "Mono" enabled. In my case I use Stereo as default, since I'm mainly making music videos, but having a toggle for the default setting would satisfy both crowds.
P.S. Blender's video editor is pretty darned good!

Apparently, the waveform drawing is too slow to have enabled as a default setting. Maybe there will be a waveform Gsoc project on improving waveform drawing. On the righthand side of the Sequencer header, you'll find the Overlay dropdown. here you can switch on the waveform for all audio strips. If you need to batch change multiple the mono settings then use +alt.
Also the animation curve of keyframes on audio volume could be displayed over the waveform just like in CoolEditPro / Adobe Audition.
